A Visitor’s Guide to Toba Aquarium
Welcome to Toba Aquarium, one of Japan’s largest and most famous aquariums, located in the beautiful coastal city of Toba in Mie Prefecture. Home to an astonishing number of species, this aquarium is unique for its “zone” system and the absence of a fixed route, allowing you to explore its wonders freely at your own pace.
It is most famous for being the only aquarium in Japan where you can see a dugong, the gentle and enchanting marine mammal often said to have inspired tales of mermaids.
Main Attractions & Zones
The aquarium is divided into 12 distinct zones, each recreating a different aquatic environment. Here are some of the must-see highlights:
1. Mermaid Sea (人魚の海)
This is the star attraction of the aquarium. Come and meet the graceful dugong, a large, herbivorous marine mammal sometimes called a “sea cow.” Toba Aquarium has a long and successful history of raising dugongs in captivity. Watching this gentle giant swim peacefully is a truly unforgettable experience.
2. Performance Stadium (パフォーマンススタジアム)
Don’t miss the famous Sea Lion Show! These intelligent and comical animals perform a variety of amazing tricks with their trainers. The show is fun, engaging, and perfect for visitors of all ages. Check the daily schedule upon arrival for show times.
3. Weird and Wonderful Creatures Laboratory (へんな生きもの研究所)
As the name suggests, this zone is dedicated to the strangest and most bizarre creatures of the deep. From giant isopods to oddly shaped fish, you’ll find a fascinating collection of marine life that will make you say, “What is that?!” It’s both educational and incredibly entertaining.
4. Ancient Sea (古代の海)
Travel back in time and meet “living fossils.” Here you can see creatures that have survived for millions of years, such as the Nautilus with its beautiful spiral shell, and horseshoe crabs. This zone offers a glimpse into the primeval oceans.
5. Coral Reef Diving (コーラルリーフ・ダイビング)
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of a coral reef. This massive, floor-to-ceiling tank is filled with colorful tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, and stunning coral formations. The glass tunnel gives you the feeling of walking right through the ocean.
