🏔️ Overview: Mt. Kongo (金剛山)

  • Elevation: 1,125 meters (Highest peak in Osaka Prefecture).

  • Vibe: It is a very active mountain. You will see many locals who climb it daily for exercise!

1. Four Seasons of Beauty

  • Spring: Cherry blossoms (sakura) and Katakuri flowers.
  • Summer: lush greenery and hydrangeas. It is significantly cooler at the summit than in the city (often 5-6°C lower).
  • Autumn: Stunning red and orange autumn leaves (foliage peaks in November).
  • Winter: This is famous for “Juhyo” (Ice Trees / Frost Covered Trees). It is one of the few places in Osaka where you can see snow and these beautiful frozen trees.

2. The Summit Plaza (Kunigi-Enchi)

Unlike many wild mountains, the top of Mt. Kongo is lively!

  • Live Camera: There is a famous camera in the main plaza that streams live on YouTube. Hikers gather every hour on the hour to wave at the camera.
  • Facilities: There are restrooms, vending machines, and a small shop selling snacks and hot cup noodles (a hiker favorite).

3. Spiritual History

  • Katsuragi Shrine: Located at the very peak (the actual highest point is sacred ground behind the shrine).
  • Tempozan Temple: A Buddhist temple located near the summit plaza.

Note: The Mt. Kongo Ropeway is currently suspended and is not operating. You must hike up.

The Main Trail (Chihaya Hondo)

  • Time: Approx. 60–80 minutes up.
  • Description: This is the most popular and well-maintained route. It consists mostly of log stairs. It is safe for beginners and families, though the stairs can be tiring!

🚌 Access (How to get there)

The most common route is via Nankai Electric Railway.

  1. From Osaka City (Namba Station): Take the Nankai Koya Line (Express) from Nankai Namba Station to Kawachinagano Station (approx. 30 mins).
  2. From Kawachinagano Station: Exit the station and go to Bus Stop #3. Take the Nankai Bus bound for “Kongozan Ropeway-mae” (金剛山ロープウェイ前).
  3. Where to get off:
    • Get off at “Kongozan Tozanguchi” (金剛山登山口) to start the main hiking trail. (Ride time: approx. 35 mins).

💡 Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Gear: Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. If you visit in winter (Jan-Feb), you must bring crampons (spikes for your shoes) as the trail becomes icy and slippery.
  • The Stamp Card: Locals carry a card to stamp how many times they have climbed. Some legendary hikers have climbed it over 10,000 times!
  • Food: While there is a shop at the top, it is recommended to bring water and a light lunch to eat at the picnic tables.
